Best cat carrier: the guide to choosing well (2026)

Choosing the best cat carrier does not follow the same rules as for a dog. A dog travels with you; a cat, on the other hand, endures the journey. The right carrier is therefore not the one that is easiest to carry, it is the one that reduces its stress – and two details, often missing from product pages, do more for that than everything else.

Criterion no. 1: the top opening

This is the point that changes daily life the most, and nobody talks about it enough.

A cat does not walk into a carrier: you put it in. With a front door, you have to push it, and it braces itself against the edges – the scene every cat owner knows, the one that turns a trip to the vet into a ten-minute struggle.

With a top opening, you lower it in. It slides down, settles, you close it. The difference is counted in minutes and in scratches avoided, on every trip, for years. If you were to remember only one criterion, it would be this one.

Ideally, look for a model that combines both: the top to put your cat in, a side door to let it walk out on its own on arrival.

Criterion no. 2: leaving it somewhere to hide

A stressed cat looks for a small, dark, covered space. That is exactly what it does at home when it squeezes under a piece of furniture – and it is what a fully transparent carrier denies it.

A transparent window has a real advantage: seeing what is going on, and seeing you, reassures many cats. But let us be honest, it also has a limit: some cats, especially the most fearful, feel exposed when they are visible from every side in a waiting room full of dogs.

The best compromise exists and it is simple: a model that offers visibility on one or two sides and an opaque wall on the others, where the cat can turn away when it has had enough. Failing that, a light towel over part of the carrier does the same job – without ever blocking the airflow.

The formats, and which one to choose

The soft shoulder bag is the most common: light, easy to store, perfect for a short trip to the vet. Its limit comes quickly – all the weight rests on one shoulder. See shoulder bags and pouches.

The backpack frees both hands and spreads the weight. It is the best choice as soon as there is walking, stairs or public transport. See cat backpacks.

The hard crate protects better in the car and can be washed down thoroughly – a real argument, because stress causes accidents. On the other hand it is bulky. See transport crates and cages.

The wheeled model becomes valuable for a large cat or a big station: you pull instead of carrying. See wheeled bags, cases and trolleys.

Size: measure, do not rely on weight

The stated load tells you what the seams can take, not whether your cat fits inside. And we almost always underestimate its real length, because we see it curled up.

Measure it standing: from the nose to the base of the tail, then from the floor to the top of the head. Compare with the stated interior dimensions, never the exterior ones. It must be able to stand up, turn around completely and lie down stretched out.

A cat of ordinary build needs more room than you would think; a Maine Coon or a Norwegian Forest cat, much more. Between two sizes, take the larger one – except for a very anxious cat, which feels safer in a snug space.

Ventilation, and the question of heat

Airflow should be spread over several sides, not concentrated on a single front grille. That is true all year round, and critical in summer.

A point rarely mentioned: a plastic shell or a full window lets the sun in and traps the air. In hot weather, a breathable mesh model is clearly safer than a bubble model, however pretty it is. Avoid the hottest hours, never leave the carrier in the sun, and watch for panting – in a cat, that is already a warning sign.

Safety: the critical moment is opening it

A cat almost never escapes during the journey. It escapes at the moment you open the carrier, in a car park or a waiting room.

Hence the importance of an internal leash clip to attach its harness before any opening, and of zips whose pullers clip together: a determined cat will open a zip that gapes. Also check for a firm base – on a soft base, the cat slides and stays tense for the whole journey, which makes everything worse.

Getting used to it takes longer than for a dog

A cat very quickly links an object with an unpleasant experience. If the carrier only comes out on vet day, it will know what awaits it before you have even opened it.

The method that works: leave the carrier open in the house all the time, like a piece of furniture. Put in a blanket that smells of home, a few treats now and then, without asking for anything. Many cats end up sleeping in it of their own accord – job done.

Only then: close it for a few seconds, carry it a few steps, take a short trip that ends back home. Never force your cat in.

Our selection to get started

For everyday use, the soft cat carrier with a domed top gives headroom and opens from the top.

For a cat that likes to watch, the cat backpack with a panoramic front offers a wide view while keeping opaque sides.

And for trips away, the wheeled airline cat carrier lets you switch between carrying and rolling.

Frequently asked questions

Soft or hard for a cat?
Soft for everyday use, short trips and the aircraft cabin. Hard for the car and long journeys. In both cases, the base must be firm.

Do you need a carrier with a window?
It reassures many cats, but not all: a fearful cat prefers to be able to turn away. A mixed model, with at least one opaque wall, suits most cats.

How do I get my cat in without a fight?
Choose a model that opens from the top, and leave the carrier open in the house between trips so that it stops being an alarm signal.

Which carrier for a large cat?
Measure it standing and go generous, with a firm base and ventilation on several sides. Beyond a certain weight, a wheeled model really takes the strain off.
