"Dog carrier" is a catch-all word: it covers a sling you slip on in two seconds just as much as an 8 kg rigid crate. Choosing is therefore not about finding the best model, it is about finding the right format. And that comes down to just two things: your dog's weight, and the real length of the trip.
The five formats, and the honest limit of each
The sling or shoulder bag
A single strap across the body, the dog against your hip. It is the fastest to put on and the most discreet. Its limit: all the weight rests on one shoulder. Under 5 kg and for less than a quarter of an hour, it is the best choice; beyond that, the shoulder pulls and the trip feels long. See shoulder bags and pouches.
The front carrier
Worn at the front, the dog against your chest, in your scent. It is the most reassuring format for a puppy or an anxious dog, and the only one that lets you stroke it without stopping. Its limit: it blocks the view of your feet, which matters on stairs, and it is only for small dogs. See front carriers and slings.
The backpack
Both hands free, the weight spread over both shoulders: the most versatile format in town and on public transport. Its limit: around ten kilos, beyond which the human back protests. See dog backpacks.
The rigid crate
The most protective, the easiest to clean, and reassuring for dogs that like to feel sheltered. It is the only real answer in the car and for the hold of a plane. Its limit: it is heavy, bulky and fits nowhere when stored. See transport crates and cages.
The wheeled model
Essential above 10 kg or over long distances: you pull instead of carrying, and the difference is huge in a station or an airport corridor. Its limit: stairs and uneven ground, where you have to lift it – hence the appeal of 2-in-1 models that switch from back to wheels. See wheeled bags, cases and trolleys.
Deciding by weight
This is the criterion that decides first, before material, colour or format.
- Up to 5 kg – anything is possible. Choose by use: sling for town, front carrier for an anxious dog, backpack as soon as you walk. See small dog carriers.
- From 5 to 10 kg – the backpack is the clear choice, with padded shoulder straps and a chest strap. A shoulder bag becomes a chore.
- From 10 to 15 kg – a 2-in-1 backpack and wheels model, or wheels straight away.
- Over 15 kg – wheels and a reinforced frame, or a crate for the car. See large dog transport.
Careful: the stated load tells you what the seams can take, not whether your dog fits inside. Two 8 kg dogs can differ in length by ten centimetres.
Deciding by use
In the car, the format matters less than how it is secured: strapped in with the seat belt or wedged on the floor, never left loose on a seat. See our guide transporting your dog safely by car.
In the aircraft cabin, the bag must fit under the seat in front of you, in the dimensions set by the airline: a soft model is a must, a rigid shell will not fit.
Hiking, you want a ventilated back panel, support straps and a way to switch between carrying and wheels when your shoulders tire.
At the vet, a shoulder bag or a front carrier is more than enough if the practice is nearby – and it goes on faster, which counts with a dog that has understood where you are going.
The six criteria that apply to every format
- Interior dimensions, compared with the length of the dog measured standing. It must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down.
- Ventilation on several sides, not just a window at the front.
- A firm base. On a soft base, the dog sags in the middle and stays tense for the whole trip.
- An internal leash clip to attach the harness: escapes happen when the bag is opened, never during the trip.
- Reinforced seams and closures – on a heavy dog they are what gives way first, never the fabric.
- Carrying suited to the weight: shoulder bag up to 5 kg, backpack with chest strap up to 10 kg, wheels beyond that.
The three mistakes we see most
Choosing by the stated weight. The dog's length decides. Measure it, compare with the interior dimensions, keep a margin. Our size guide gives the method.
Buying for the puppy's size. Six months later, it will have doubled in volume. Buy for the dog it will become.
Discovering the bag on the day. A dog carrier taken out of its box on the morning you leave guarantees a tense dog. Leave it open at home for several days beforehand.
In short
A dog under 5 kg for short trips: sling or front carrier. The same dog for walking: backpack. A dog from 5 to 10 kg: backpack with chest strap, ideally 2-in-1. Beyond that: wheels. And for the car, whatever the size: a secured container.
Frequently asked questions
Which dog carrier for a chihuahua?
Every format works at this weight. A sling for town, a front carrier if it is anxious, a small backpack as soon as you walk for more than ten minutes.
Backpack or crate for the vet?
The backpack if you go on foot or by public transport. The crate if you take the car, because it can be secured and protects when you brake.
Does a dog carrier tire the animal?
No, if it is the right size and well ventilated. What tires a dog is a space where it cannot turn around, or a soft base that keeps making it slide.
Can you use a baby carrier for a dog?
It is not recommended: it has no internal leash clip, no ventilation designed for an animal, and no closure that prevents escape.
