Each airline sets its own limits, and they change. There is no universal figure – but the order of magnitude is stable:
- A total weight (cat + carrier) with a cap, often around 8 kg. Some airlines go lower.
- Maximum dimensions to fit under the seat, generally around 45 × 30 × 25 cm.
- A soft carrier required in the cabin, precisely because it compresses a little.
- A separate booking for the animal, with a limited number of places per flight.

Why soft is the only option

The rabies vaccination must be valid, and it needs a waiting period before it is recognised – which is why you do not prepare a trip the day before. Outside the EU, requirements vary a lot: some countries demand additional tests and several months' notice.
Talk to your vet as soon as the travel date is known, not a fortnight before.
Preparing your cat
The carrier should be a familiar place several weeks before departure. Leave it open at home, with a blanket that smells of home. A cat that discovers its carrier at the airport faces a pile of new things it cannot cope with.
As for food, a light stomach is better: avoid a meal just before the flight, while keeping water available until you leave. Calming pheromone sprays, applied in the carrier half an hour beforehand, help some cats – ask your vet, as with any idea of a sedative, which is generally not recommended for flying.
On the day: going through security
This is the moment nobody sees coming, and it is the trickiest part of the trip.
At the security gate, you will have to take your cat out of the carrier and hold it in your arms while the bag goes through the scanner. In a noisy hall, surrounded by strangers, a cat that is not secured can escape.
