Shoulder bag and satchel: the format you grab without thinking
The dog shoulder bag and the cat satchel meet a very specific need: heading out quickly, for a short time. A single strap across the body, the pet against your hip, and you are out of the door in ten seconds. No shoulder straps to adjust, no fastening to wrestle with.
It is the format for the vet appointment, the errand at the end of the street, the taxi ride. And it is often the one pets accept fastest, because they stay at hand height and keep an eye on what is going on.
Shoulder bag, satchel, tote, sling: what sets them apart
The shoulder bag is worn across the chest, the strap on one shoulder and the weight on the opposite hip. It is the most stable of the family: the bag does not swing with every step.
The satchel is flatter and more discreet, often made of canvas or mesh. It blends into a city outfit and suits small pets that like to curl up.
The tote opens wide at the top, which reassures pets that dislike enclosed spaces — but it puts all the weight on one shoulder.
The sling, finally, is a wide strap in which the pet nestles against you, surrounded by your scent. Close to a front carrier: see front carriers & pet slings.
Its real limit: time, not weight
This is the point to understand before buying, and the one people discover too late.
A shoulder bag puts all the weight on one shoulder. At 4 kg and for five minutes, you feel nothing. At 6 kg and for twenty minutes, the shoulder aches, you switch sides, and the journey drags. This is not a manufacturing fault: it is how the format works.
The simple rule: under 5 to 6 kg and for less than a quarter of an hour, the shoulder bag is the best choice. Beyond either, switch to a backpack. See dog backpacks and cat backpacks.
Several models on this page are also convertible: shoulder bag for quick outings, backpack as soon as the walk gets longer. For the same size, it is almost always the best buy.
What to check
- A wide, padded strap. On this format, it carries everything. A thin strap digs into the shoulder from 4 kg.
- A firm base. Without a stable surface, the pet slides to the middle of the bag and stays tense the whole journey.
- An inner leash to clip the harness to. On a top-opening bag, it is what prevents an escape at the moment you take out your wallet.
- Ventilation on several sides, preferably mesh: this format is worn against your body, and your warmth adds to the pet's.
- An adjustable strap length, to set the height of the bag to suit you.
- A wide opening: you lower the pet in, you do not push it.
Getting the size right
Measure your pet standing: from the muzzle to the base of the tail, then from the floor to the top of the head. Compare with the stated inside dimensions, never the outside ones. It must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down stretched out.
An adult cat of average size needs more length than you would think when you see it curled up. And a 3 kg chihuahua is often longer than 30 cm: it is that length that decides, not the kilos.
For other pets and other uses
A few models on this page are designed for rabbits, hamsters and birds, with suitable openings and ventilation. See small & exotic pets.
For a very small dog, every format is an option: see small dog carriers. And in the car, whatever the bag, it must be strapped in with the seat belt or wedged on the floor — never left loose on the back seat. See car carriers.
The whole range is gathered in cat carriers and dog carriers.

Frequently asked questions
Up to what weight does a shoulder bag stay comfortable?
About 5 to 6 kg, and for short trips. All the weight rests on one shoulder: beyond that, or as soon as the walk lasts more than a quarter of an hour, a back-worn model is far more manageable.
Shoulder bag or backpack for the vet?
The shoulder bag, if the practice is close by: it goes on faster and the animal stays at hand height. The backpack as soon as there is a longer walk, stairs or public transport.
Is a satchel suitable for a cat?
Yes, as long as the cat can stand up and turn around, and the ventilation is well spread. Cats feel safe in a covered space, but mesh remains essential.
How do I stop my pet escaping when I open the bag?
By clipping its harness to the inner leash before opening. Escapes happen when the bag is opened, never during the journey.
