Size guide: which carrier for your dog or cat?
Choosing the right carrier size is the key to your companion's comfort and safety. A carrier that is too small stresses it, one that is too big throws it about. Here is how to get it right.
How to measure your pet
Two measurements are enough for a standard carrier; a third is needed for a front carrier. A soft tape measure is all you need:
- Length: from the nose to the base of the tail.
- Height: from the floor to the top of the head (or the shoulders), standing.
- Chest girth: just behind the front legs, at the widest point. This is the measurement that decides on a front pouch or front carrier, where the animal puts its legs through openings: it is no longer the volume of the bag that limits, but the spacing.
As a guide, for the front carrier we offer, the manufacturer lists four sizes: a maximum chest girth of 28 cm in S, 43 cm in M, 48 cm in L and 63 cm in XL – with weight limits of 2.5 kg in S, 2.5 to 3.5 kg in M and 3.5 to 9 kg in L. The figures vary from one model to another: it is the method that carries over, not the table.
The golden rule: your pet must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably in the carrier. If in doubt between two sizes, always take the larger one.
Which type of carrier by weight?
| Pet's weight | Suitable options | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 5 kg | Backpack, shoulder bag, front carrier, soft bag | Chihuahua, Yorkshire terrier, kitten, small adult cat |
| 5 to 10 kg | Structured backpack, ventilated soft bag | Adult cat, small dog, Bichon, Cavalier |
| 10 to 15 kg | Reinforced bag, wheeled bag (trolley) | Medium dog, Beagle, Cocker spaniel |
| 15 to 20 kg and more | Wheeled bag, transport crate | Large dog, Bulldog, Border Collie |
These guidelines are indicative: body shape matters as much as weight. Always check the model's dimensions against your pet.
Choosing by use
- Walks / town – a backpack or a shoulder bag, hands free.
- Long journeys / large pets – a wheeled bag so you do not carry all the weight.
- Aircraft cabin – check your airline's approval requirements and dimensions. Our flying guide (IATA standards) →
Our advice
Get your pet used to it gradually: leave the carrier open at home for a few days, with a treat inside, so it adopts it as a new cosy spot. Always prioritise good ventilation (breathable mesh) and a padded base.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if the carrier is the right size?
Your pet must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in it. If it is cramped or cannot change position, the carrier is too small.
Should you choose by weight or by size?
Both matter. Weight points to the type of carrying (back, wheels…), while length and height determine the interior dimensions needed.
Why measure chest girth?
In a front pouch or front carrier, the animal puts its legs through openings: it is no longer the volume that limits, but the spacing and chest girth. A light but broad animal will be cramped in a size chosen on weight alone.
Between two sizes, which should you take?
Always the larger one: your pet will be more comfortable, especially on long journeys.
