Cat backpacks

Cat backpack: your hands free, your cat close to you

The cat backpack solved a problem everyone knew without putting it into words: carrying a bag at arm's length or on one shoulder becomes a chore after ten minutes. On your back, the weight is spread across both shoulders, your hands stay free for a handrail, keys or an umbrella — and your cat can feel you there the whole time, which calms it more than you might think.

It is also the format that has changed the most in recent years, with the arrival of window models. People talk about a cat carrier backpack, a carrying pack or a back-worn cat carrier: it is the same object. This page brings together our whole range, and what you need to know before choosing.

Window or mesh: the real question

This is the choice that divides people most, and it deserves an honest answer rather than a sales pitch.

The clear window gives an open view and reassures many cats: shut in the dark, a cat panics; able to see what is going on and to see you, it relaxes much faster. It is also the most eye-catching model, and the most photographed.

Breathable mesh ventilates better, weighs less and stays more discreet. In hot weather, it is the safer choice — a plastic dome lets the sun in and traps the air.

You will sometimes read that you should "never" buy a bubble backpack. The argument holds in one specific case: a bag where the bubble would be the only opening. Our window models are not like that — they combine the window with side ventilation holes and a mesh panel, and the window covers only one side, the others staying opaque so the cat can turn away when it has had enough. We covered the subject frankly in our article window backpacks: what people hold against them.

Carrying: what changes everything beyond ten minutes

A 4 kg backpack can be carried without a second thought. At 7 kg, it is a different story: the weight pulls backwards, shifts with every step because the cat moves, and the journey feels long.

Two things fix most of it. Padded shoulder straps, wide ones that do not dig into the shoulder. And above all a chest strap, which pulls the load against your back instead of letting it swing backwards. Without one, a rounded bag sits far from the body and tires you quickly.

Beyond 7 to 8 kg, the backpack honestly reaches its limit: it is better to switch to a wheeled model, which you will find among our wheeled bags.

Size, before anything else

The load rating in kilos tells you what the seams can hold, not whether your cat fits inside. Measure it standing — length from the muzzle to the base of the tail, height from the floor to the top of the head — and compare with the inside dimensions, not the outside ones.

The rule that never lets you down: your cat must be able to stand up, turn around completely and lie down stretched out. If it cannot turn around, the bag is too small. Between two sizes, take the larger one.

What to check

  • Ventilation independent of the window — side holes, a mesh panel, or both.
  • An opaque side where the cat can turn away from the world.
  • Padded shoulder straps, and a chest strap if you walk for a long time.
  • An inner leash to clip the harness to: cats escape when the bag is opened, never during the journey.
  • A firm base, so it does not slide around with every step.
  • A wide opening, ideally from the top: you lower the cat in, you do not push it.

What if a backpack is not the right format?

For a kitten or an anxious cat, front carrying often works better: the cat is against you, surrounded by your scent. See our front carriers & pet slings. For short trips and the vet, a soft shoulder model is enough — the whole range is in cat carriers. For the car and long journeys, a crate remains the safest format: see the transport crates. And for nature outings, our selection walks and hiking.

Our advice

Frequently asked questions

Is a backpack comfortable for a cat?

Yes, on three conditions: it can turn around, air circulates on several sides, and there is an opaque wall to hide behind whenever it chooses.

Up to what weight is a backpack suitable?

Up to 6 or 7 kg with a chest strap. Beyond that, carrying becomes hard work for you and a wheeled model is more sensible.

Are bubble-window backpacks dangerous?

The risk concerns models where the bubble is the only opening, which trap heat. A bag combining a window, side vents and a mesh panel does not have that flaw. In any case, never in full sun.

How do I get my cat used to the backpack?

Leave it open at home for several days, with a blanket that smells of home. When your cat goes in on its own, close it for a few seconds, then gradually longer. Never force it.
